Participant information sheet

You are invited to take part in a research study. Before you decide whether to participate, please read the following information carefully so that you understand why the research is being conducted, why you have been invited, and what participation will involve. If you have any questions, please contact the researchers. Participation is entirely voluntary: you are under no obligation to take part, and you may decline or withdraw your consent at any time.

We'd like to bring to your attention that this research is a replication of Tse and Haslam (2023), any language or terminology has been taken from this study.

1. What is the purpose of this study?

The purpose of this study is to gain a deeper understanding of how people perceive the term ‘neurodiversity’. Specifically, we aim to explore whether participants consider certain conditions to be neurodivergent and the traits they associate with these conditions. We also seek to understand how individuals interpret the term ‘neurodiversity’ and what it personally means to them.

2. Why have I been invited?

You have been invited to participate because you have shown interest in taking part via an advert for this research.

3. Do I have to take part?

No. You can leave the study at any time—before, during, or after taking part. If you change your mind afterwards, you can ask for your data to be removed within two weeks by emailing one of the researchers with your memorable word. After the two-week period, we won’t be able to remove your data.

4. What will happen if I take part?

If you agree to take part, you will be asked to choose whether a list of conditions listed in the DSM-5 (a diagnostic manual) are an example of neurodiversity. In the next section, you will be presented with a list of traits or features. Using the same scale, you will be asked to rate the extent to which you think each trait contributes to neurodivergence. Each section will end with an open-ended question where you can share your own views in more detail. The study will take place online, and we recommend completing it in a quiet environment so you can focus comfortably.

5. What will happen if I want to stop taking part?

You have the right to withdraw from the study at any time up to two weeks after completing your participation online. To withdraw, please email any member of the research team to let us know—no reason is required. Please include your memorable word in the email so that we can identify and remove your data without using any personal information. After the two-week withdrawal period has passed, we will no longer be able to remove your data.

6. How will my data be used?

Your data will be held in compliance to the university’s current data protection legislation. All data collected is used fairly, stored safely, and not disclosed to any other person unlawfully. Your data will be held under a password protected programme and will be stored under no identifying information, only your stated memorable word.

7. Will my participation be confidential?

Yes. No personal data will be linked to your data, instead you are asked to provide a memorable word. After two weeks, your memorable word will be taken off your data points, as this is when the right to withdraw has passed.

8. What are the risk of taking part?

There are no risks in taking part. If you feel at risk, please contact a researcher.

9. What are the possible benefits of taking part?

For the members of the public, you will be contributing to long lasting research. Whereas, for University of Plymouth students will be contributing to long lasting research as well as being awarded 0.5 SONA point towards their course.

10.What if there is a problem?

If you have any problems while taking part or after taking part please contact a researcher, and we will try to help you.
